POSITION: Water Treatment Plant Operator III

 

CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

  • Grade III Certificate as a Water Treatment Plant Operator from the California State Water Quality Control Board

JOB SUMMARY:

 

This position will be responsible for full range of treatment plant responsibilities and for the performance of the most complex and difficult assignments. The Water Treatment Plant Operator III will receive general supervision from the Chief Plant Operator.

 

SCHEDULE: TBD Based off company needs. Must be able to work standby, holidays, weekends and overtime as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

  • Operates, monitors, and maintains all plant equipment and components, including but not limited to pumps, valves, plumbing, gearboxes, fans, blowers, aerators, and flow controls
  • Reads and interprets meters, gauges, and charts; maintains and upgrades mechanical and electrical systems
  • Inspect plant operations making appropriate adjustment to process controls, ensuring that operational problems are identified and corrected
  • Ensures that plants are operating within safety standards established by federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and regulations; provides training and supervision for less experienced personnel, as necessary
  • Perform water pollution control laboratory testing and analysis, including taking samples and coordinating detailed testing with outside laboratories
  • Ensure to adhere to quality assurance programs for laboratory analysis and instrumentation
  • Reports preparation and updating, including records and logs in compliance with state and federal mandates for reporting
  • Performs maintenance and construction work as directed on the water treatment system and related facilities
  • Loading and unloading equipment and materials
  • Maintain plant facilities and grounds in a safe, clean, and orderly condition
  • Establish positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies and associations, City management and staff, and the public
  • Performs other duties as assigned by direct supervisor

ESSENTIAL JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade or equivalent
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English (verbally and written)
  • Valid class C California Driver’s License
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant
  • Knowledge of:
    • Modern principles, practices, and techniques of water treatment plant operations
    • Repair, maintenance, and adjustment procedures for treatment plant equipment and controls
    • Basic principles, practices, and methods of laboratory testing procedures
    • Operational characteristics of the tools used in maintenance of stationary power equipment, pumping systems, and electrical systems
    • Methods and techniques of supervision, training, and motivation
    • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Ability to:
    • Interpret, explain and apply applicable laws, codes and regulations
    • Read, interpret, and record data accurately; organize, prioritize, and follow- up on work assignments
    • Analyze a complex issue, and develop and implement an appropriate response
    • Operate office equipment including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications

 

 

 

SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Employee frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. Employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Employee must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds
  • Employee may be exposed to biohazards and a variety of working conditions, including wet, hot, and cold
  • Employee may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust, and air contaminants
  • Ability to climb ladders and work in confined spaces. Incumbents will also work around high voltage and loud noise
  • Ability to respond to after hours emergency call-outs
