LOCATION: San Bernardino County

POSITION: Grade 5 Water Treatment Operator 

CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Valid Grade T5 Water Treatment Operator Certificate and Grade D3 Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by SWRCB

JOB SUMMARY: The Grade 5 Water Treatment Operator will perform a full range of duties as assigned, will work independently and will exercise judgment and initiative. Positions at this level will receive occasional instruction and assistance when new or unusual situations arise; operator is expected to have a full understanding of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

SCHEDULE: TBD Based off company needs. Must be able to work standby, holidays, weekends and overtime as required.

SALARY: $40.00 to $48.00 per Hour (depending upon qualifications) + Benefits  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Operate and monitor Water Treatment Plant Facilities including, but not limited to, disinfection, coagulation, flocculation and filtration process equipment
  • Operate potable and non-potable systems including, but not limited to, seven different distribution system pressures, reservoirs, transmission facilities and two conventional Surface Water Treatment Plants
  • Operate wells to maintain reservoir storage; ensure reservoir structures are clean and operating correctly
  • Perform and assist in minor and major plant equipment maintenance including, but not limited to, electric motors, pumps, gear housings, chlorination equipment, analyzers and process control equipment
  • Test and adjust regulators to maintain and ensure proper chlorine residual and tabulate flow readings
  • Observe variations in plant functions and operating conditions through SCADA System
  • Clean and backwash filters to maintain optimal treatment within CDPH guidelines
  • Change out 150lbs to 1-ton chlorine gas cylinders and deliver sodium hypochlorite to well sites; perform general maintenance on chlorination equipment
  • Record and interpret water table information for all well sites
  • Monitor charts, graphs, meters, instrument gauges and electronic systems; utilize computers for operations and updating data
  • Interpret data and changing process needs from laboratory results, chemical dose calculations and observations; makes adjustments to ensure proper operation of plant
  • Collect water quality samples; use laboratory testing to ensure water meets CDPH and EPA Standards
  • Handle hazardous materials; receive and transfer chlorine, caustic soda, alum, ammonia, potassium permanganate, activated carbon and polymers
  • Assess facilities and make minor repairs as necessary; coordinate major repair activities with appropriate maintenance personnel
  • Inform appropriate personnel of present and potential issues and hazards
  • Responsible for housekeeping of treatment facilities
  • Conduct Water Treatment Facility Tours
  • May assist in leading and training onboarding employees
  • Performs other duties as assigned by direct supervisor

ESSENTIAL JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English (verbally and written)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Minimum five years of experience in a Water Treatment Plant

SPECIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Employee frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. Employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Employee must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds
