CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Valid Grade III Wastewater Treatment Operator Certificate issued by the SWRCB 

JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Water Utilities Director, this advanced journey level position will assume the highest responsibility and the most complex duties assigned. This will include overseeing the daily operations of the wastewater treatment plant on an assigned shift and the organizational needs of the department. The Wastewater Treatment Operator III will plan, assign, supervise, coordinate, and participate in the work of staff responsible for operating all processes of the wastewater treatment plant; ensure compliance with City and mandated wastewater treatment quality standards; produce statistical information as mandated by local, state, and federal governments; ensure the quality and continuous treatment of wastewater through the treatment plant.

SCHEDULE: TBD Based off company needs. Must be able to work standby, holidays, weekends and overtime as required.

SALARY: $40.00 – $45.00 + Benefits 


  • Oversee the daily operation of the plant on an assigned shift by coordinating assignments, setting priorities and goals, evaluating workflow, enforcing policies, rules, and regulations
  • Administer performance evaluations and recommend corrective action as needed
  • Assist and train new or current plant operators
  • Develop and maintain procedure manuals; recommend operational improvements
  • Maintain and monitor operating logs and records
  • Records instrument readings; perform surveys; enter data into computer and generate reports, forms, graphs, and memos; evaluate, summarize, compile, and reword data from a wide variety of source documents; audit and correct incomplete or incorrect documents
  • Keep track and control inventory; order supplies as needed; coordinate transport, storage and/or disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials
  • Read meters, gauges, and charts; regulate wastewater flows in accordance with established procedures; monitor pump station alarms
  • Performs all necessary control tests and calculations to maintain efficient operational quality
  • Assist in and collect water samples for laboratory testing following proper procedures; perform chemical testing
  • Operate plant equipment including pumps, valves, electric motors, switch gear, compressors, blowers, chlorinators, engines, and other allied equipment
  • Inspect equipment to determine operating condition and makes necessary adjustments; performs general maintenance and repair of equipment utilized in and around plant
  • Maintain and operate various work-related vehicles including forklifts; clean and lubricate equipment
  • Inspect, maintain, and change chlorine tanks and cylinders; adjust proper chlorine dosage for odor control and/or disinfection
  • Operate and control sludge digesters and presses
  • Operate aeration equipment as needed; record results of test and other measurements and plots data on graphs
  • Perform general janitorial and light maintenance repair work in and around the plant, including grounds keeping and painting
  • Interact professionally and efficiently with various levels of staff within the plant
  • Performs other duties as assigned by direct supervisor


  • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade 
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English (verbally and written)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Minimum three years of experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility


  • Employee frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. Employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Employee must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds
