Job Description

LOCATION: Central Valley

POSITION: Utilities Operations and Maintenance Leadworker

CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Valid Grade 2 Water Distribution Operator Certificate; CWEA Collections Systems Maintenance Grade II
JOB SUMMARY: This position is an advanced-journey level position. The position requires to perform skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water distribution, wastewater collection, and storm drainage systems. This position will exercise lead supervision of water, wastewater, and drainage field crew but will also receive supervision. This position will be responsible for the more complex and difficult construction, repair, and maintenance tasks in the water, wastewater, and drainage areas.

SCHEDULE: TBD Based off company needs. Must be able to work standby, holidays, weekends and overtime as required.

SALARY: Ranges from $30.15 to $42.59 based off of experience + Benefits 

  • Leadership of small crew and participation in the construction, maintenance, and repair work of water distribution, wastewater collection, and storm drainage systems
  • Maintain records of completed work and prepare material requisition for each task
  • Install, remove, replace, and repair of large and small water services
  • Cut, fit, lay and repair water mains; clean and flush water mains; instruct and direct others in related tasks
  • Repair and maintain water mains and hydrants, sewer lines, storm drains, valves, pipes, fittings, and related appurtenances
  • Manage and operate large trucks and construction equipment such as loaders, backhoes, trenching machines, compressors, cranes, hoists, slope mowers, and harvesters. In addition operate rodding machine and truck, hydraulic equipment, high pressure combination cleaner and closed-circuit camera equipment
  • Conduct preventive maintenance and emergency cleaning of sanitary sewers and storm drains
  • Install, test, repair and maintain meters and mechanisms
  • Perform traffic control
  • Locate, excavate, tap, and repair water and sewer lines, and storm drain facilities
  • Practice shoring techniques when appropriate
  • Perform maintenance and operate pipe cleaning, inspection, and maintenance equipment
  • Keep routine records
  • Access and use the CMMS (computerized maintenance management system), to receive and send e-mail, and to complete routine forms and reports
  • Update as-built drawings and maps
  • Maintain truck ready to be operated at all times. Operate such truck
  • Compile inventory of parts, supplies, and safety equipment used by field construction and maintenance crews
  • Ensure the safety of the public in performing water, sewer, and drainage maintenance including drainage and flood control system evaluations.
  • Service and install flood gates and valves
  • Operate computerized spray applications equipment
  • Training and assistance of less experienced personnel
  • Maintain job site safety standards and practices
  • Performs other duties as assigned by direct supervisor


  • Knowledge of confined space entry techniques
  • Ability to recognize and deal with hazards encountered in the course of work
  • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade 
  • Ability to communicate clearly in English (verbally and written)
  • Valid Class B Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements
  • Valid Class A Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements
  • Three years of experience as a Utilities Operation and Maintenance Serviceworker or six years of experience in underground installation, construction, and/or repair of water distribution, sewer, or drainage


  • Employee frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. Employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Employee must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and or move up to 50 pounds
